Isomalt is an excellent sugar-free bulk sweetener.
Discovered in the 1960s, isomalt is made from sucrose and looks much like table sugar. It is white, crystalline and odorless. It is a mixture of two di-saccharide alcohols: gluco-mannitol and gluco-sorbitol.
Isomalt is used as a healthy sugar substitute in products such as hard candies, toffees, chewing gum, chocolates, baked goods, nutritional supplements, cough drops and throat lozenges.
Isomalt offers benefits, which suit contemporary guidelines for healthy diets including; low caloric value; is easily digested; and does not contribute to tooth decay in children.
